SEWING TIPS FOR HAND WOVEN TEXTILES:

WEAVE STRUCTURE DESCRIPTIONS:

At Fiber Doodles, we generally weave plains or twill fabric unless otherwise requested.  The textiles that we weave at Fiber Doodles are created using worsted wool, linen and combinations of the two.

*If you have specific textile needs, email us to get scheduled into our production lineup.

PLAINS:

In plain weaves or plains, warp threads alternate one up, one down.  If you look across a row of plain weave, you will see warp thread, weft thread, warp, weft, and so on.

Example of Plains fabric:

TWILLS:

Twills cross over and/or under more than one thread and the lines are diagonal.  2/1, 2/2, and 3/1 twills are the most common.  A 2/1 twill crosses over two warp threads and under one.  A 2/2 crosses over 2 warp threads and under two.  A 3/1 (i.e. modern denim jean fabric) crosses over three warp threads and under one.  Twills tend to be denser and drape better than plain fabrics.

FINISHING TIPS:

Woolen fabrics can be finished in one of two ways.  They can be soaked in the washer and the water spun out (non-fulled) or they can be agitated (fulled).  Fulled fabrics tend to be denser than non-fulled fabrics.  They also are easier to cut and sew as they do not unravel as readily.

FABRIC CARE:

Wool fabrics can be hand washed or dry cleaned.  If you chose to hand wash, fill the washer with warm water.  Stop the washer when the desired water level is achieved.  Add a very small amount of mild detergent.  Put fabric into the washer and push down into the water.  Soak for about 1/2 hour without agitating (leave the washer off!).  Move the dial to Spin cycle (spinning and agitating are not the same).  Lay fabric/garment flat to dry.  Iron if desired.

*Note:  Hand woven fabrics handle differently than commercial fabrics.  We are not responsible for any damage done to the hand woven fabric due to mishandling or inexperience.
